Pursuit

Handle #2- We Always Pursue with Passion What We Value!

INTRODUCTION

By nature, we always pursue what we don’t have, and we always pursue things we see as valuable! In a dating relationship we are pursuing in every way possible. If they like something, it’s easy for us to go along. Once we’ve “caught” the one we are pursuing many people become lazy. Let’s find the value and begin pursuing again.

KEY SCRIPTURE

Genesis 2:24

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Hebrews 3:13

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

Genesis 29:20

So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed like only a few days to him because of his love for her.

James 4:17

If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

James 5:16

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

What’s the craziest (“corniest”) thing you’ve ever done for love?

In Genesis 2:24 it says to be united. What are some ways to be united together in your marriage/relationship?

What kind of things make you feel pursued?

When you are pursued and feel united with your spouse, how does it impact the way you pursue them?

The things that were endearing or cute become annoying as time passes. We often try to get our partners to change. The statement was given; “If you don’t like what you’re getting, look at what you’re giving!” Discuss some ways you can put this into action today?

PRAY TOGETHER

Jesus, thank You for always showing us an unconditional and extravagant love. Align our hearts with Yours so we can love others better. Holy Spirt, help us to be faithful in always pursuing a godly marriage. Amen

MOVING FORWARD

  • If you’re married, ask your spouse today what makes them feel loved, then do it.

  • Start each day this week quoting James 4:17 (see above).

COMMENTARY

Genesis 2:24-25

2:24-25 God’s timeless design for marriage is declared here. The one flesh relationship certainly involves sexual union, but also includes a husband and wife coming together in spiritual, mental, and emotional harmony. Because the devastating effects of sin had not yet ravaged nature or humanity, there was no need for clothing. Adam and Eve could live without the barriers needed to shield them from their environment and each other without a sense of shame.
